CHRISTIE ELAN-CANE
NON-GENDERED
Fighting for legal and social recognition outside the gendered societal structure

EARLY DAY MOTION No. 47

REMINDER

Parliament has resumed after long summer recess and EDM 47 count is rising again!

http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/47

I’ve delivered another mailshot to hundreds of sitting MPs, most of whom are eligible to sign EDMs, and the time is right to redouble our efforts and increase the momentum.

If anyone is in any doubt of the importance that all who care about this issue should be prepared to stand up and shout, I’ve received a number of responses this time around from mainly Conservative MPs who want to hear directly from people within their constituencies who would benefit from having an ‘X’ passport and require that inappropriate gendered references are removed from their documentation.

It is ESSENTIAL that everyone with a stake in this issue makes the effort to contact their elected parliamentary representative, either in writing or through making an appointment to visit them at their constituency office. I have done the groundwork and will provide guidance if necessary. If you are not on my mailing list (and I’ve lost many of your email addresses due to recent computer failure), I can be reached at Christie.Elan-Cane@ukgateway.net

It would be helpful if you can forward your MP’s response to me.

We are less than half way through the current annual parliamentary session and we are very nearly half way towards getting enough signatories to call for a parliamentary debate on ‘X’ passports.

The issuing of ‘X’ passports will signify a turning point where society will undoubtedly become increasingly aware of the issues faced by non-gendered and bi-gendered people. When ‘X’ passports were issued in Australia the federal government soon after issued guidance to all government departments that ‘X’ should become a standard third option on all government forms and records.

The governing authorities of all European countries are extremely backward by comparison with Australia, New Zealand (which has the best policy of all – total self-certification), India and other Asian states. Overall, with trans* issues, some countries within Europe have a better record than others, but none have taken on board the issues faced by non-gendered and bi-gendered trans* except for Denmark, which operates a vile policy and not worth repeating here with no clear sign of this issue being incorporated into new legal changes announced today regarding self-certification for (gendered) trans* and Germany, where all that is achieved from its recent policy change is that someone can be ‘outed’ as intersex whether they choose to be open or not.

‘X’ passports are an initial step but a significant step on our long hard road to better provision, full legal recognition of our identities as neither m/f with associated civil ‘rights’ that others can take for granted and, ultimately, social equality with male and female. We deserve no less and should aspire to no less.

My aim is there should be in excess of 100 supportive MP signatures to EDM 47 before close of this session and pressure for a full debate prior to next year’s general election.

There will also be internal pressure from various sources to stop the EDM’s progress (because, believe it or not, there are many people who really do not want us to have the same social privileges that they can take for granted) and I am very much aware the EDM could be scuppered at any time.

It is ESSENTIAL that people who care about this issue are prepared to get involved by approaching their MP and making their voices heard.

That, by the way, is not the ‘NEWS ON THE WAY’ referred in a previous posting, which has aroused a degree of minor curiosity but you’ll need to wait a short while longer.

The denial of existence is the worst act of discrimination by the gendered majority against the non-gendered
