‘X’ Passports raised in Written Parliamentary Question to European Commission

Following Early Day Motion 907 tabled on 6 January 2014, this similarly titled WPQ was tabled on 21 January 2014 by Liberal Democrat MEP Sir Graham Watson.

The WPQ notes the ICAO provision of ‘X’ for sex as “unspecified” on machine readable travel documents, also notes the positive steps taken in Australia and New Zealand and asks what, if any, guidance the Commission has given to encourage EU Member States to allow their citizens to use non gender-specific ‘X’ passports.

The reply from the Commission dated 14 March 2014 states “EU Member States are free to take up the possibility to which the Honourable Member refers. The Commission will, in the appropriate fora, encourage Member States to consider doing so.”
