Fighting for legal and social recognition outside the gendered societal structure
RE-TABLING EDM IN SUPPORT OF 'LEGAL RECOGNITION FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH A PARTICULAR GENDER'
Early Day Motion (EDM) No. 889 'LEGAL RECOGNITION FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH A PARTICULAR GENDER' tabled 17 December 2013 must have set a new precedent for lack of duration before it was “suspended” the following day and then removed from the ‘active’ section of the Parliament EDM database one day later. Less than 48 hours after tabling, EDM 889 was gone without trace as though it had never existed. With the demise of EDM 889, HM government had tried once again to bury the issue along with the people whose lives are blighted (effectively non citizens within a so-called ‘democracy’), buried along with EDM 889 as though we did not exist.
EDM 889 was sponsored by six MPs and had a total of ten signatures at the time of its untimely suspension. I understand other Members had been prepared to add their signatures in support of this important issue had the EDM remained active.
The reason for suspension is that government ministers do not sponsor or sign EDMs.
On 18 December 2013 it was announced that Simon Hughes MP, my parliamentary representative who tabled the motion, had accepted a ministerial position at the Ministry of Justice. The EDM was subsequently suspended and could not be signed. I had no advance knowledge or forewarning and had only found out the EDM had “disappeared” from view on the parliament website just minutes before emails began arriving from supporters asking if I could tell them what was going on.
While is it good that my local political representative is now situated at a key position within the government (where I shall continue to lobby in the interests of people who do not define as male or female, who are denied a legitimate identity and provision to function within a gendered societal structure), there had been much work done over a period of months to ensure the EDM was tabled in order that political and public consciousness of this issue could be raised. The opportunity presented by tabling an EDM – and notwithstanding all the hard work that went into getting the EDM tabled at all – will not be allowed to go to waste.
Julian Huppert MP, a co-sponsor of EDM 889, has agreed to resubmit the EDM to the tabling office on 6 January 2014.
As the original EDM was rendered null and void, all sponsorship and signatures were cancelled and must be obtained again in order to be considered valid.
Once more, I urge to everyone who cares about the principle of legitimate identity as a fundamental human right to contact your local MP and ask their support for the motion.
If your local representative is not eligible to sponsor or sign the EDM, it is nonetheless worthwhile they are contacted and briefed – in order to make all of our political representatives aware of this issue – and of the genuine human rights violations against those who are denied a legitimate identity by society – and to gain their political support for the issue in any way they can offer.
I will update further after tabling has taken place.
